General Summary:
The Prevention/Intervention Specialists are actively involved in the local, public, and tribal schools to provide scientific, research-based, Model Substance Abuse Prevention curriculum. They act as role models and mentors who provide education and healthy alternatives to substance use/abuse.
Position Responsibilities:
- Gather chemical health and wellness information/presentations
- Assist in planning and development of chemical health information/presentations.
- Provide and/or present chemical health information to community members through newspaper articles and other community events.
- Interview one sober/healthy community member per quarter and insert interview in tribal newspaper.
- Lead and/or facilitate discussions groups for youth on the emotional, physical and social aspects of chemical use/abuse and dependency
- Present Chemical Health Prevention Curriculum in area schools.
- Assist in providing services to at risk youth and their families.
- Develop alternative activities for youth, as directed by supervisor.
- Organize alternative activities for youth, as directed by supervisor.
- Facilitate alternative activities for youth, as directed by supervisor.
- Supervise youth in program-sponsored activities.
- Assists with medication administration in accordance with Human Services Division Prevention/Intervention Program Policies and Procedures.
- Recruit participants for program activities
- Schedule and attend activities during hours that will promote maximum participation by youth.
- Report behavior infractions of participants to parents and supervisor.
- Complete incident reports as needed.
- Drive van to transport participants and chaperones.
- Develop and disseminate program flyers to announce department activities.
- Develop positive working relationships with parents and recruit parents for program activities.
- Work cooperatively with all segments of the community.
- Document program participants/attendees
- Complete and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
- Submitting logs as required.
- Maintain healthy/appropriate staff- youth boundaries.
- Learn Prevention strategies developed by The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services).
- Coordinate activities with other programs and departments including, but not limited to Social Services, Ojibwe School, Public Health Nursing, and Reservation Community Centers.
- Appropriate work attire is required.
- Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
- Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees, band members and/or clients.
- Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
- Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
- Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Normal physical requirements.
Position Qualifications:
- High School or GED is preferred.
- Successful completion of an alcohol/drug training course is desired.
- Must be free of chemical use problems for at least one year immediately preceding hire and must sign a statement attesting to that fact.
- Two (2) years experience in social services/community work is required.
- Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, Access, Excel and Microsoft Outlook is required.
- Position requires employee to be available to work some evenings and weekends.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
- Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
- Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
- Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
- Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
- Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations
