General Summary:

The Golf Course Superintendent is one who is entrusted with the maintenance, operation and management of the golf course grounds. It is his/her responsibility to supervise the maintenance of the golf course grounds, all golf course equipment, repair and construction, and to do related work as required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for managing and maintaining golf course properties, which includes:
    • The golf course.
    • Maintenance equipment.
    • Golf cart fleet.
    • Clubhouse grounds and landscaping.
    • Open spaces, wooded areas, unused acreage adjacent to the course.
    • Sod farm and nursery.
    • Other properties as specified in writing by the superintendent’s supervisor.
    • Must operate all equipment, tractor and drive the shop truck.
    • Position requires the employee to be on call for emergencies.
  • In collaboration with the Head Golf Pro oversees the construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of the course, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors.
  • Following the guidelines and policies set forth in the Golf Course Development and Organization Guide.
  • Prepares the annual budgets for the maintenance and capital improvement of course properties. The superintendent formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets in accordance with the long-range plan and defined maintenance standards.
  • Interviews, recommends according to the Fond du Lac Reservation Policy, trains, directs and supervises a staff of employees for the purpose of maintaining the properties.
  • Plans all maintenance and project work, applying his/her agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the agreed-upon maintenance standards and long-range goals.
  • Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The superintendent frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
  • Ability to pick up equipment and purchase necessary supplies to maintain the golf course and other properties, subject to Band budget and expenditure polices. The Superintendent is responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. The Superintendent approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep as nearly as possible, operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.
  • Communicates regularly with other members of the top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans and customer input.
  • Department uniform is required and provided to the employee, which must be worn during scheduled work hours unless prior arrangements have been made with management.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Must attend all required Title 31 and/or SAR trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary

  • Normal physical requirements.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices is required.
  • Working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods is required.
  • Thorough understanding of the game of golf and its rules and strategies of course construction.
  • High degree of administrative and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision-making is required.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, law and regulations) is required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications to include word processing, databases and/or data entry, spreadsheets, and Microsoft Outlook is required.
  • Current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Some travel is required.
